Teaching parts of speech the fun way

Parts of speech get easier when pupils can play with language.

The colour hunt Give pupils a short text. Nouns are marked blue, verbs red and adjectives green.

The test questions - Can you put a or the in front? Then it is often a noun. - Can you put to in front? Then it is often a verb. - Can you put very in front? Then it is often an adjective.

Silly sentences Let pupils swap every adjective in a sentence. "The small cat" becomes "the purple cat".
